DeskTrust Connect for remote engineering teams

By The DeskTrust Team

Engineering teams are Connect\'s hardest sell. Engineers live in Slack notifications from GitHub, CI systems, Sentry, PagerDuty. Ripping out Slack for those teams is genuinely painful.

So the pitch here is different. Don\'t cancel Slack. Cancel Zoom and TeamViewer.Use Connect for calls and remote pairing. Keep Slack for the notification firehose.

Where Connect fits into an engineer\'s day

  • 1:1 pairing. One engineer clicks Call in their DM with a teammate. Both on video in 3 seconds. Screen share for pairing on a bug. Done.
  • Team standup. The Engineering Group\'s auto-provisioned team chat room already has everyone in it. Video call from the room header. Active-speaker highlighting keeps a 6-person standup readable.
  • Live debugging with a colleague. Screen share during a call, walk through the issue, ship the fix.
  • Show-and-tell / demo day. Someone starts a standalone broadcast to the #engineering room. People join for the demos they care about, drop out for the rest. Way less friction than a 30-person Zoom.

Where Connect doesn\'t fit

  • The notification firehose from GitHub, CI, Sentry — no Connect integrations for these yet.
  • Threaded conversations on incidents — Connect doesn\'t have message threading in v1.
  • Slack-native workflows and Slackbot rituals — culturally different product.

What about privacy?

Engineers are the group most sensitive to being monitored — which is fair, given the surface area they interact with. Two things worth knowing:

  1. Connect doesn\'t change the monitoring surface. If your org uses DeskTrust\'s screenshot and activity tracking, that\'s a separate product decision, made when you signed the DeskTrust contract. Connect is comms on top of that.
  2. Manager screen viewing is consent-first every session. It cannot be silent. If a manager wants to look at your screen, you\'ll always see a modal. If you don\'t want that feature enabled, admins can turn it off in Settings.

The pairing story

For remote engineering teams, live pair programming via screen share is the killer use case. In Connect this is: click the person\'s name → Call → Share Screen → work together. No calendar link, no meeting room, no "let me send you a Zoom invite."

Compared to tuple.app or similar dedicated pairing tools, Connect isn\'t as specialized. But for teams that don\'t want another tool, it\'s good enough.

Practical rollout

  1. Enable Connect for the engineering team\'s DeskTrust Group.
  2. Turn on Chat + Calls. Leave Manager View OFF (engineers rarely need it).
  3. Ask the team to try Connect for pairing and standups for 4 weeks.
  4. Keep Slack for notifications.
  5. Assess: did Zoom usage drop enough to cancel the team\'s Zoom seats? If yes, downgrade.

Realistic saving: $12-20 per engineer per month on cancelled Zoom + Loom + pairing tools.
