DeskTrust Connect vs. Zoom: what you gain, what you give up

By The DeskTrust Team

Zoom is the reference video-call product. Fifteen years of edge-case fixes. Massive investment in codec negotiation, echo cancellation, and every network flavor imaginable. Nobody is seriously going to say DeskTrust Connect matches Zoom on raw call quality across the whole long-tail of enterprise network conditions.

But most teams don\'t need that whole long tail. Here\'s an honest comparison for the ones who don\'t.

Where Connect is genuinely competitive

  • 1:1 calls in normal browsers on normal networks. Connect calls connect fast and stay connected. On a home fiber or a decent office network, you won\'t notice a difference.
  • Group calls up to 10 participants. Connect\'s SFU-based architecture handles this cleanly. Active-speaker detection keeps things readable.
  • Screen sharing during a call. One click, resolution matches your monitor, participants shift to a side rail. Nothing missing here.
  • Recording. Server-side WebM, plays back in-browser with seek support. Retention policy is per-org configurable.

Where Zoom is still ahead

  • Webinar-scale broadcasts. Zoom Webinar supports thousands of attendees. Connect caps at 25 in a group call.
  • Weird network conditions. Corporate VPNs, cellular hotspots at rural coffee shops, aggressive firewalls that block UDP entirely — Zoom\'s got a fallback for most of these. Connect works on the majority but not every edge.
  • Breakout rooms, polls, whiteboards. Meeting-first features Zoom builds and rebuilds every quarter. Connect doesn\'t have them.
  • Marketplace integrations. Zoom has an app store. Connect doesn\'t.

What Connect has that Zoom doesn\'t

  • Consent-first manager screen viewing. Not a Zoom feature. TeamViewer\'s version isn\'t consent-first.
  • Immutable audit log for every screen-view request, approved or not.
  • Zero-configuration directory. Every DeskTrust employee is a Connect user. No inviting people to a Zoom account, no "external participant" fees.
  • Same admin panel as your monitoring tool. Fewer places to check.

The pricing angle

Zoom Pro is $15 per user per month. Connect is $0 extra on top of a DeskTrust subscription you\'re already paying for. If you have 20 users and are currently paying Zoom Pro, that\'s $300/month you can put back in the budget.

Should you cancel Zoom?

Depends. Try this: for two weeks, force yourself to make every non-webinar call from Connect instead of Zoom. If ≥90% of them worked fine, cancel Zoom and save the money. If a few didn\'t work, keep Zoom on a single account for exceptions. You\'ll still save 90% of the bill.
