For everyone

Voice & video calls

WebRTC calls that start from a chat room. 1:1 or group. Works in any modern browser without an app.

Start a call

  1. Open any chat room with at least 2 members.
  2. Click the phone icon (audio) or camera icon (video) in the room header.
  3. Your browser prompts for microphone (and camera, for video). Grant permission.
  4. The other member(s) see a full-screen ring modal in all their open DeskTrust tabs.

Calls ring for 30 seconds. If nobody answers, the call ends and appears as "missed" in the call history.

Accept, decline, or ignore a call

When you get a ring modal:

  • Green button — accept. Grants mic/camera and joins the call.
  • Red button — decline. Other side sees "Declined."
  • Do nothing — after 30 seconds the call auto-declines and shows as "Missed" for everyone.

In a group ring, one person declining doesn\'t kill the call. It proceeds with whoever accepts, and other invitees can still accept until the 30-second window closes.

During a call

The call fills your screen. Controls at the bottom, participant grid in the middle.

  • 🎤 Mic — click to mute/unmute. Other side sees the change instantly.
  • 📷 Camera — click to hide/show video. When off, you become an initial-avatar tile.
  • 🖥 Screen — see the screen sharing docs.
  • 🔴 Record — see recording docs.
  • Hang up — big red button. Leaves the call for you; others continue if they want.

Group calls

Start a call from any group room. Everyone in the room gets a ring modal simultaneously. As people accept, tiles populate the grid — up to 2×2, 2×3, or 3×3 depending on how many are on.

The tile of whoever is currently talking gets an emerald ring so 5+ person calls are readable.

Plan limits on group call size:

  • Free — 1:1 only (2 participants)
  • Starter — up to 4
  • Growth — up to 10
  • Enterprise — up to 25

Late-join a call

If a call is already in progress in a room you\'re part of, click the room to see the "in call" indicator, then join. You\'ll connect with the current participants as if you\'d accepted the original ring.

Leave versus hang up

Clicking the red hangup button leaves the call for you. Others stay connected. The call session only ends fully when the last person leaves — at that point mediasoup releases its resources and the session gets marked ended in the call history.

Missed calls

Every ring that isn\'t accepted becomes a "missed" session in the call history. Chat rooms show a missed-call bubble in the message stream (planned for v1.1) — for now, check/dashboard/messages and the call session list.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing happens when I click Call. Your admin might not have enabled the "Voice + video calls" toggle in Settings.
  • Ring modal appears but audio/video doesn\'t connect. Usually a browser permissions issue. Check the site permissions in the padlock icon. See Resources → Troubleshooting for more.
  • The call drops after a few seconds. Your network can\'t reach the DeskTrust TURN server. Ask your admin to verify UDP 3478 is open on their DeskTrust deployment.
